The inland town of Ahuas, on the Rio Patuca, houses a regional hospital that has a decompression chamber. Emergency patients such as divers with the bends, or victims of cholera, were usually transported by air because travel by river would take too long.

Mission Aviation flew victims to the hospital from a cholera outbreak in a village. With the in-flight treatment needed, only one patient at a time could be carried, along with the pilot and a EMT.
